When someone in Chennai searches for a “dentist near me” or “AC service in Velachery”, Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any regular website results. Those three spots — often called the map pack — receive a large share of the calls, direction requests and website visits for that search.
Local SEO is the work of improving your chances of appearing there, and of standing out when you do. Much of it is within your control. Here is the checklist we use when reviewing a local business.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the single most important factor in local search. If you haven't claimed it yet, do that first and complete verification. Then fill in everything:
- Primary category: choose the one that best describes your core business. It strongly influences which searches you appear for.
- Secondary categories: add only those that genuinely apply.
- Services and products: list them with short, specific descriptions.
- Business description: explain what you do, who you serve and which areas you cover, in plain language.
- Hours, phone number and website link: keep them accurate, including holiday hours.
Avoid adding keywords or area names to your business name unless they are genuinely part of it. It breaks Google's guidelines and can lead to suspension.
2. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent
Google cross-checks your business details across the web. If your phone number differs between your website, JustDial and Facebook, or your address is written three different ways, it becomes harder for Google to trust any of them.
Choose one exact format for your business name, address and phone number — often shortened to NAP — and use it everywhere: your website footer, contact page, Business Profile, social profiles and directory listings.
3. Build a steady flow of genuine reviews
Reviews influence both your ranking and whether people choose you. Recent reviews matter, so a steady trickle is better than a burst once a year.
- Ask customers soon after a good experience, while it's fresh.
- Make it easy: share your review link on WhatsApp, or print it as a QR code at your counter.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically.
- Never buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ones. It breaks Google's policies, and customers can often tell.
4. Add photos that show the real business
Profiles with real photos of the premises, team, products and completed work give customers confidence before they visit. Update them regularly — seasonal displays, new projects and new team members are all good reasons.
5. Make sure your website supports your local presence
Your Business Profile links to your website, and Google uses your site to understand what you do and where. At a minimum, your website should:
- Show your business name, address and phone number as text (not only inside an image), ideally in the footer of every page.
- Have a dedicated page for each main service, rather than one page listing everything.
- Mention the areas you serve naturally, where it's relevant.
- Include LocalBusiness structured data so search engines can read your details reliably.
- Load quickly and work well on phones, because most local searches are mobile. See responsive web design.
6. Create useful location pages — not doorway pages
If you serve several areas, pages about your services in those areas can help. But copying one page and swapping the area name creates thin “doorway pages” that Google treats as spam.
A useful location page includes information that is genuinely specific to that area: the kinds of customers you serve there, access or landmark information, relevant work and answers to questions people in that area ask. Our Pallikaranai page shows the approach.
7. List your business on relevant directories
Citations — mentions of your business on other websites — help confirm your details. In India, useful places often include JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART for B2B businesses, industry associations and local chambers of commerce. Focus on quality and accuracy rather than hundreds of low-value listings.
8. Post updates and answer questions
Business Profile posts are a simple way to share offers, events and news. Keep an eye on the questions section too, and answer common questions yourself before someone else does.
9. Track calls, directions and enquiries
Your Business Profile shows how many people called, requested directions or visited your website. Combine this with website analytics and call tracking to see which efforts are working, and review it every month.
Local SEO rewards consistency more than one big push. A complete profile, accurate details, steady reviews and a helpful website usually beat shortcuts.
